The creation of a unique landmark design should serve more than one function; to honour those who were strong and who are not forgotten, bringing with it, national and civic pride to support and nurture the on-going task of education, reconciliation and regeneration.

Importantly the memorial should act as an aid in the healing process necessary for reconciling the now centuries-old damage to the relationship between black and white, the result of the legacy of the slave trade, which still bears bitter fruit in terms of human relations.
